Sustainability

LiDestri is committed to the ongoing implementation of increasingly effective business processes which reduce negative environmental impacts and increase positive awareness. Solutions inspired by the commitment of our employees, suppliers and customers, are the staple ingredients to our success.

Our Recipe:
Have a knowledgeable leader
Our full-time sustainability manager keeps us focused on achieving our goals.

Provide positive inspiration
We like to share tips on ways to recycle and reuse waste generated from our products.

Reuse and recycle
There are endless possibilities. Our goal is to achieve 95% raw material waste reuse and recycling by 2013.

Save the trees
As we move toward becoming a paperless company, we strive for a 25% decrease in paper use by 2013.

Invest imaginatively
We will make purchases and require changes in our processes that will have a positive impact on our sustainable goals.

Commit wholeheartedly
We are committed to installing technology that will decrease our water usage by at least 50% across our facilities by the year 2014.

Take every idea seriously
Big or small, from employee or customer, we will look at each and every opportunity as exactly that—an opportunity to make a positive impact on our environment.

Here’s what we’ve cooked up so far:

2005—Installation of a Condex Heat Recovery System in the Fairport facility, conserving over 35,000MMbtu per year. The heat recovered is used to heat process water throughout the facility.

2005—An effort to reuse and recycle any and all raw material dunnage was undertaken. We currently recycle up to 90% of cardboard material, metal straps, waste glass, plastic banding, tomato totes and pretty much anything else we can find to recycle (see Awards below).

2006—Participation in an energy assessment done by Syracuse University under the Save Energy Now initiative (see Awards below). For more information on the Industrial Assessment Center at Syracuse University or at a university near you, go to http://mhmonline.com/news/mhm_imp_4595/index.html

2009—Installation of a suspended solids recovery system in the Fresno facility to reduce waste released in the waste-water stream. The by-product of this waste is being researched as a food additive for animal feed or as a compost additive used as a base for roadway development.

2010—Our water recycling project is underway. We are looking at innovative ways to reuse and recycle cooling water across all of our facilities.

Awards received:

10/2007—Energy Saver Award through the Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now Program. Learn more about the recognition program at http://www1.eere.energy.gov/industry/saveenergynow/recognition.html.

4/2008—Environmental Leadership Award in the Reuse/Recycling Category presented by the Rochester Business Journal and Bank of America.

The recipe to our sustainability success is good enough to share with everybody!
